The 8th Most Expensive Painting in the World

When offered at Sotheby’s New York in May 2006, the pre-auction estimate for this Picasso painting was pegged at a mere $50 million. But when it sold for $95,200,000 it attained at that time the second-highest price ever paid for a painting. On our list of the Top Ten Most Expensive Paintings, today it stands at Number 8.

8. “Dora Maar au Chat” by Pablo Picasso, sold in 2006 for $95.2 million. Inflation-adjusted price $101.8 million.
“Dora Maar with Cat” owes its allure to the relationship of the artist and the woman he pictured. Painted in France, in 1941 by Pablo Picasso, the controversial portrait is sometimes described as an unflattering depiction of Maar, his mistress for over ten years. An artist/photographer of Croatian descent, Picasso was fond of calling Maar his "private muse.”

Picasso depicts Maar seated on a chair with a small, black cat perched on her shoulder. The canvas is 50 by 37 inches (128 cm by 95 cm).

Picasso painted many other portraits of Maar in evidence of the extraordinary love affair, which made her famous forever. Twenty-five years his junior, her real name was Henriette Theodora Markovitch.

To Select The Perfect Frame, First Take A Picture

A beautiful painting deserves a beautiful frame. But with so many styles, colors, and sizes to consider, choosing the perfect frame can be a daunting task for anyone.

So before you spend lots of time and money on a custom-made, ready-made or do-it-yourself frame for your artwork, follow this easy professional tip:

Grab your camera, hang the artwork without a frame on the wall where you plan to display it, and take a few photographs of it.

Print your photos 8x10” or larger, either on your home printer or make large photo copies at Kinko's. When you’re ready to shop for a frame be sure bring the photos and your artwork with you to the frame shop.

By considering the colors of the wall or paneling behind the artwork, as well as the style and color of the room’s furniture and drapery, you’ll find it so much easier to zero-in on the ideal frame for your particular setting.

The Frame Shop at BINDERS can answer any questions you have about expert custom framing and ready-made frames. They offer a huge selection of frame and mats so you’re sure to find the perfect frame for your artwork. And their experienced advice is free.

SPECIAL 50% OFF FRAMING THROUGH MAY 31, 2009. Act now to take advantage of this opportunity to save big on framing at BINDERS.
